1955 Selmer SBA Soprano Sax
1955 Selmer SBA Soprano Sax
Here is a very rare Selmer Super Balanced Action soprano sax in original silver plate. While it is a 59xxx serial number, well into the Mark VI alto and tenor era, they did not introduce the Mark VI soprano until later according to Selmer Historian Doug Pipher.
He also told me. was silver plated in France and shipped in October 1955. He considers the crossover to actual Mark VI sopranos to have happened in the 68xxx range with very few produced prior to then.
This one has seen use and wear. It is hard to photograph the very light rippling in the body tube and up towards the neck. Also at the lip of the bell, a little easier to see.
Nothing of consequence to the mechanics but the wear is there.
The horn is playing on a mix of fairly recent pads and you could go a few ways with it from here, the least of it being a quick setup to a partial pad replacement to a full overhaul. It just depends for the next owner so I’m mention it and leave it RIght now its playing but a little rough and even a few adjustments come improve performance a good deal.
The sound is rich and amazing, not quite like a VI , more open and full. Jerry Bergonzi tried it absolutely loved it.
Comes in the original case. No musty odors.
